Last week marked a significant milestone in my journey as a Halifax resident when I, alongside Andrea Leet and Julie Millington, was warmly welcomed into the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbour. The induction ceremony, held during the weekly breakfast meeting at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel, was both inspiring and humbling.
The morning carried a special energy as existing members shared stories of their Rotary experiences and the impact their projects have had on our harbour city. Over hot coffee and morning pastries, we learned about the club’s rich history of community service and its vision for the future. What struck me most was the genuine enthusiasm with which every member approached their commitment to “Service Above Self.”
The induction ceremony itself was meaningful yet personal. Each of us shared our professional backgrounds and what drew us to Rotary. For me, it was the desire to contribute meaningfully to Halifax’s community while connecting with like-minded professionals who share a passion for service. Andrea spoke about her vision for youth engagement, while Julie expressed her interest in international humanitarian projects.
As new members, we were each paired with experienced Rotarians as mentors to help guide us through our first year. My mentor, Sarah, has already proven to be an invaluable resource, sharing insights about the club’s ongoing initiatives and helping me identify where my skills might best serve our community goals.
The warmth and inclusivity of the existing members were palpable. They shared not just their experiences with various service projects but also the lasting friendships they’ve formed through Rotary. As one long-time member put it, “Rotary isn’t just about what we do for the community – it’s about the community we build together.”
Looking ahead, I’m excited to dive into upcoming projects and collaborate with fellow members who bring such diverse perspectives and expertise to our club. Whether it’s supporting local youth initiatives, participating in environmental conservation efforts, or contributing to international humanitarian projects, the opportunities to make a difference seem boundless.
As we closed the meeting with the traditional Rotary bell, I felt a profound sense of belonging and purpose. Joining the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbour isn’t just about adding another commitment to my calendar – it’s about becoming part of a legacy of service that has been making waves of positive change in our community for generations.
Here’s to new beginnings and the chance to serve alongside such dedicated individuals. Together, we look forward to contributing our time and talents to strengthen both our club and our beloved Halifax community.
